Future-Proofing Your Gear When You Buy New Camera Equipment

I recently did a photoshoot with my a7iii with the sony 85mm 1.8. I usually did portrait shots on 1.8 to 2.0 aperture but I decided to close it down a bit (2.8 all the way to 5.6). The results were kind of shocking to me. Because I shot it outdoors in nature and open fields I got the same creamy bokeh as with 1.8 but my subject was even more sharper and in focus. I compared hundreds of shots to previous ones and I couldn't figure out why these ones look better. The subject stood out even more from the background, even with the aperture closed down quite a bit and I'm really happy with the results. Gonna use the open aperture only in low light conditions from now on

Hi! I have a canon r8 and am currently looking for an affordable lens in the focal range of 24-70 or 24-105. I'm willing to buy used and everything under ~800€ is okay. Which lens would you recommend? I already have an ef-rf adapter, so the ef mount is definitely a possibility. I mainly want a really nice and sharp lens, preferably with a fixed aperture of 2.8 (or 4). But there is 20 years of lenses to work through and I kinda lost track of which one is still good to todays standard, yet affordable.

Great review. For an enthusiastic amateur the price differential is massive at 2.5 times the price for the RF 85mm f1.2 ($2,000 AU). My copy of the EF 85mm f1.4 must be a really good copy, as it is critically sharp at f1.8, with f1.4 totally acceptable and I find the IS essential for my 5DSR. A magic lens with fantastic micro contrast.

I do find it interesting that someone would complain about the macro capabilities of a lens that is not a true macro lens. If you want a professional level lens buy 100mm F 2.8 L lens. It has a 1.4x magnification. It has Dual Nano USM motors. Problem solved!

Great video. You are the very few in the world speaks about the color rendering of lens. This was the only point I was looking for a decision. The new lenses don't have smooth color fall offs and don't flare at all which is taking away the artistic capabilitiws of the lens.

I'm sorry but this is not a accurate comparison, the stills AF speed between the two is not even in the same universe, the EF can focus three times in the time it takes the RF to loudly hiccup it's way to focus, even with the focus limiter set to limit to the EF's range.

I tend to think that anything that makes your photos look different from what you’d see with your own eyes, needs to have a thought-through purpose behind it. Photography can (and often should) augment your own vision, obviously - and who doesn’t love the way a shallow depth of field can represent the way your eyes can focus on things and give an exaggerated, stylised, beautiful version of how our brain processes that kind of attention? But it’s just one of many tools in the kit. You want to be able to play more than one tune

The v1 of this lens now regularly goes for around 200€. An absolute steal for photography. For videography, the loud IS is a complete deal-breaker if you have your microphone mounted on the camera itself. The v2 with a basically inaudible IS sytem will set you back more than 2.5x that price. Coming from a completely manual set of FD lenses, I plan on using this for some run'n'gun videography where I don't want to always have to nail the focus manually and shoot at smaller apertures to make it easier for me.

I had an R6 and sold it. I HATED the IBIS. It ruined more footage than it saved. I couldn't disable the IBIS and just use the specifically chosen stabilised lenses!!! Seriously loathsome. Changed over to an actual cinema camera. I love working with a camera dedicated to the task, it improves my skills and lessens the mental conflict. And no IBIS in the camera means no camera second guessing intention. I use stabilised lenses and a rock solid sensor. But boy do I miss shooting stills on the R6. The flip screen, the jpgs, the speed and the quiet operation offer a different style of waist level, point (at the screen) and shoot which I love. The R looks like exactly the machine I am looking for. Back to flip out point and click, no IBIS (hooray!!) and dedicated stills ergonomics. Have seen folk rave about the feel in the hand of the tapered moulded grip. That wonderful 5D IV sensor and stupendous ISO. There’s video there in a pinch or if I need to quickly generate easy content. Mmmm, let the hunt begin.

Good day, I'm going to sell my favorite RP, which I bought new for a great price and I still have a warranty (but I have an interested party), but I'm still hesitating whether I should keep it or really sell it and buy a used R6 since the official sale is over. Will I recognize the difference in the resulting photo and video compared to RP? I know the R6 can handle higher ISOs and is faster and probably more reliable in focusing... but will I feel the difference - will it move me further? I photograph wild nature, but also portraits and celebrations and here and there also smaller weddings 🙃😊

Hi Justin ! Great review and critical analysis after all the "hype" ! Things I did not consider and I'm wavering between the FX-six and A7ssss-three for Dokumentyr ! You did not mention IBIS that the FX6 does not have... and that requires post-prod. CATALYST processing of each clip. What are you thoughts 3 years after your review if you have time ? Best wishes, Mike
